Signups for this year's Lakewood Education Foundation charity golf tournament are underway now. Proceeds directly support the efforts of local teachers. Thanks to generous donations from Lakewood residents and businesses, the Lakewood Education Foundation (LEF) has been able to give grants of up to $500 for hundreds of classroom improvement projects in Lakewood schools since 2003.

Last year, 95 Lakewood school projects received grants totaling $43,165! This shows the importance that Lakewood residents and businesses place on our local schools . . . and the trust they place in LEF to select worthy projects. The grants went to classroom projects in each of the public school districts in Lakewood, as well as St. Pancratius School.

But, over 70 grant applications last year could not be funded because there weren't enough donations to fulfill them. That is why your donations would be so welcome.

Children sharing a book.LEF is a non-profit agency run by Lakewood residents. An annual fireworks stand, Columbus Day golf tournament, and dozens of individual donations raise the annual funding. The group is operated solely by volunteers and, therefore, has very low overhead costs.

In 2013, several Lakewood classrooms received new iPads from LEF that teachers use to control slide presentations while they walk around their classrooms and interact with students. Students will also be able to use the iPads for individualized enrichment activities. LEF funds also went for new P.E. equipment.

You can donate by making out a check to the Lakewood Education Foundation and mailing it to LEF, c/o Lakewood City Hall, 5050 Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712. Donations are tax deductible.
